Journal Entry - What does Bismarck mean by the terms "Blood and Iron?"
Otto Von Bismarck's speech given on 30 September 1862, at the time when he was Minister President of Prussia, about the unification of the German territories. -
"The position of Prussia in Germany will not be determined by its liberalism but by its power [...] Prussia must concentrate its strength and hold it for the favorable moment, which has already come and gone several times. Since the treaties of Vienna, our frontiers have been ill-designed for a healthy body politic. Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided—that was the great mistake of 1848 and 1849—but by iron and blood"
Name Changes -
In 1871, German states (notably excluding Austria) united to create the German Empire under Prussian leadership. In November 1918, the monarchies were abolished and the nobility lost its political power during the German Revolution of 1918–19. Prussia was a historically prominent German state that originated in 1525. In 1933, Prussia lost its independence, when the Nazi regime was successfully established under Hitler's election to the Chancellors position.
