CHAPTER 13 The Rise of Totalitarianism


Objective:
Students will be able to understand the widespread disillusionment with prewar institutions, authorities, and values the resulted in a void that was later filled by totalitarians.
Students will be able to discuss the influence of World War I on literature, art, and intellectual life in the West (e.g.,Pablo Picasso, the :lost generation" of Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway)

Rationale:
The aftermath of World War I with its winners and losers sets the stage for totalitarians to raise among the rubble of defeated countries. 5 powerful men emerge from the social and political situation and transform the way  government and power operate in a society. Having a basic understanding of these men and the situation where they developed in essential in understanding the late 20th century.

Evidence:
Being able to list the Totalitarian leaders and the different conditions that led to their power, as well as the results of their reign.

Questions - 
1. on what factors would you base the minimum wage?
2. Would it apply to all businesses or is there a minimum numbers of employees a company have to have?
3. Would it only apply to high volume sales types of jobs (fast food - because they have such a high volume of sales, the price increase effect is minimized because it's spread out over lots of little purchases)
4. What about the Calif Plan ($1 more each year over the next 5 years)

As well as describe the effects of the war and resulting peace treaties on population movement, the international, economy, and shifts in the geographic, and political borders of Europe and the Middle East.

The transition from World War I ending and the various reactions which occurred around the world is important to understanding as a means of setting-up the economical and political foundation which led to World WAR II

Evidence:
Being able to list the factors that the Treaty of Versailles placed on the German people as well as the German Economy, as well as the impact of World Wide depression of the 1920, will enable students to connect these events into understanding the reasons WWII occurred.

Journal Entry -What factors lead children into gender roles and what does that mean for equality, opportunity, and expected behaviors that are deemed "normal."  Read the article below and be ready to comment on this...

Is it ok they way we raise girls and boys as long as there's no stigma attached  for "acting out of the norm".....OR.....should we acknowledge the way we currently raise kids and adjust to prevent the gender roles it creates to end the social effects (positive or negative)

The article addresses equal pay for women, but explains how society as a whole is responsible (in some way) for the current climate where women are paid lower.

Another great article today, the process of Artificial Intelligence (SIRI or Cortana) and how that tech can be corrupted pretty quick, which raises the question of AI being used for discriminatory reasons without a conscience of impact
