Today, Tuesday May 26th marks the last regular school day of the semester. The rest of the week is considered dead week and no new assignments are to be introduced. Your last assignment Ch 17.1 is due Thursday. No quiz on Thursday as its part of dead week. The next scheduled days (Thursday and Monday would be spent studying for the final, making a cheat sheet, turning in your timeline (if it was actually assigned....and it wasn't....and submitting your assignment sheet....which also isn't assigned)

The Modern Middle East

(Chapter 16 section #4)


Objectives:
Students will be able to understand how the forces of nationalism developed in the Middle East, how the Holocaust affected world opinion regarding the need for a Jewish state, and the significance and effects of the location and establishment of Israel on world affairs.

• Students will be able to  Discuss the important trends in the regions today and whether they appear to serve the cause of individual freedom and democracy.

•  Students understand how the forces of nationalism developed in the Middle East and how the Holocaust affected world opinion regarding the need for a Jewish state; and students discuss whether recent trends in the region serve the cause of individual freedom and democracy.

•  Students compare the present with the past, evaluating the consequences of past events and decisions and determining the lessons that were learned.

Rationale:
The politically challenging situation in the Middle East (particularly in the Jerusalem area) effects all aspects of governmental decision making for many Middle Eastern COunties as well as non Middle Eastern  Countries

Evidence:
The ability to list and explain the various historical events (from various perspectives) will demonstrate a basic understanding of the issues surrounding this geographical area for the hundreds/thousands of year

Objective:
students will be able to:
Understand the importance of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan, which established the pattern for America’s postwar policy of supplying economic and military aid to prevent the spread of Communism and the resulting economic and political competition in arenas such as Southeast Asia (i.e., the Korean War, Vietnam War), Cuba, and Africa.

Rationale:
The rile the US gov't played in shaping the post WWII landscape is important to understanding the growing cold war conflict with USSR and the various PRoxy wars as a result

Evidence:
Knowing and listing the motivating factors for the Truman Doctrine and Marshall plan is essential in understanding the US influence in the Western world

Objective:
students will be able to:
Analyze the Chinese Civil War, the rise of Mao Tse-tung, and the subsequent political and economic upheavals in China (e.g., the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and the Tiananmen Square uprising).

Rationale:
Communism as a concept is one of the most misunderstood ideas in World History, this section will provide some historical content to China and their pursuit of implementing the Communist system.

Evidence:
Being able to list the various underlying principles of why Communism (as an economic theory and Government system) was first devised and what its goals were, is essential to understanding Communism.
