Middle East Conflict

Palestinian/Israeli Conflict          Wars in Iraq          ISIS

Chapter 16 Section #4, Chapter 17 Section #3

Objective:
students will be able to:
-Understand the challenges in the regions, including their geopolitical, cultural, military, and economic significance and the international relationships in which they are involved.
-Describe the recent history of the regions, including political divisions and systems, key leaders, religious issues, natural features, resources, and population patterns.
-Discuss the important trends in the regions today and whether they appear to serve the cause of individual freedom and democracy.

Rationale:
The Middle East and its Oil reserves became a major political region through the 1980's and into the 1990's. Each Gulf country was jockeying to maximize its oil production. During this period Iran and Iraq went to war. The results of the war left Iraq in debt and its country depleted. Oil was the answer, and Iraq invaded Kuwait to expand its access to the Persian Gulf and the Oil fields of Kuwait, The US felt compelled to respond. Students need to understand the circumstances surrounding the first Gulf War and how 9-11 events led to the return to Iraq for a war that still effects the USA today

Evidence:
Being able to list the various policies and actions taken by certain countries and the response to those actions will demonstrate that students can track the various players and events that occurred in the time between 1990- and modern day.
